Castiglione and the old railway

Discovering the eastern side of Etna by MTB, discovering the small village of Castiglione di Sicilia through the route of the old CircumEtnea railway. It starts from the Bikepoint of Zafferana Etnea, and goes up on asphalt to Milo and Fornazzo, and then advances on off-road vehicles until it reaches Linguaglossa.

From here the cycle path of the old railway begins to the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, a country full of history and legends: many are linked to the castle, but also to the Basilian cube, and to the so-called “cannizzu”, a lookout tower that it is said to have been split in two by a terrible lightning strike.

The village is located at 621 mt. s.l.m., visually controls a vast territory and dominates the Alcantara river with much of the valley of the same name

After crossing the area of Melia the dirt road begins until you reach Monte Intraleo. From here you enter the Altamontana slope where you go to the Zampini refuge, skirt Monte Ruvolo to reach the Galvarina refuge.

The natural peculiarities of this itinerary are represented by the territory as a whole which offers a view of our very particular volcano and an alternation of very varied landscapes.

In fact, we pass from the dense forests of larch pine, to the birch trees to the festuca fields, spinosanto and juniper with the constant presence of the south-west flank of the volcano (often covered with snow even in late spring, a period in which we recommend the excursion) and of the central crater often yellowed with sulfur concretions.

The return is made by the S.P. 92 passing in front of the Sapienza refuge and downhill until the return of Zafferana Etnea.
